The Pathétique and the Stalingrad

Vatché Mankerian, piano

Contrary to popular view, it is often suggested that Prokofiev was Beethoven’s true successor in writing a substantial body of piano sonatas.

Two grand sonatas in the repertoire might shed light on this issue, namely Beethoven’s no. 8 (Pathétique) and Prokofiev’s no.7 (nicknamed Stalingrad). Was Prokofikev influenced by the maestro from Bonn? And was he indeed able to inherit the baton and compose sonatas that are regarded as descendants to Beethoven’s? Come listen and decide for yourself, at this special concert by PCM piano faculty member Vatché Mankerian.

This concert is a culminating event to Dr. Vatché Mankerian’s 6-week class of the same title. For more information about the class and to register, visit the course webpage.
