Tara Parsa first enrolled at PCM as a two-year-old student in the Young Musicians program, which had been recommended by a friend of her dad, Dr. Shahram Parsa. Tara really enjoyed the classes and went on to explore a wide range of other programs at PCM, including jazz, recorder, music theory, classical guitar, and, most recently, vocal arts with Mariné Ter-Kazaryan. Dr. Parsa notes that because of her early exposure to music through YM classes, Tara “developed a musical ear,” providing a foundation for her musical journey. Today, Tara shares how music has shaped her life and her plans for the future.

What do you remember from the YM classes, and how has it influenced your approach to music now?
As I grew older, I realized that the YM classes shaped my musical abilities from a young age. It sparked my joy and love for music early on, while also helping me learn core foundational musical skills, such as keeping the beat and pitch recognition. These skills helped me build a strong foundation for success in musical theater, especially since the early pitch training improved my sight-reading skills.

What do you love most about doing musical theater?
I love acting because it allows me to connect deeply with different characters, with each role letting me explore new perspectives and emotions. I also enjoy portraying a wide range of personalities and stories because it challenges me to step outside myself and fully inhabit another person’s world.

You have spent several summers at Interlochen Arts Camp in Michigan. Can you share more about your experiences there?
Attending Interlochen has been transformative. I learned from and worked with highly passionate, talented, and hardworking peers. It’s just great to be surrounded by people with similar dreams. Each camp has also helped me develop discipline and a deeper understanding of the demands of the professional musical theater process.

Has there been a performance you are most proud of?
During the six-week program at Interlochen Arts Camp, we prepared and performed Beautiful: The Carole King Musical. It was rewarding to see how the show came together; plus, it gave a realistic preview of professional theater life, which helped me understand the demands of a full rehearsal and performance process.

What’s the most valuable thing you’ve learned through music?
Music has taught me that discipline and dedication are essential for growth. It has also shown me that consistent practice leads to mastery over time. Performing-wise, music has taught me how to connect emotionally with others on stage and the audience members. I have been blessed to learn from the very best teachers at PCM: Sharon Weed, Sherry Luchette, Mariné Ter-Kazaryan, Renee Gilormini, and Rachael Denny. They all truly showed me how to be a professional and the value of hard work to master your craft.

Do you see yourself pursuing a music/music–adjacent career?
Yes, I plan to pursue a career in musical theater. My first step is studying Musical Theater in college. Music, especially through PCM, has played a major role in my life. I have been at PCM since I was 2 years old, and now, I’m a junior in high school. I can’t imagine my life without music, and I also can’t see myself on any other path due to the profound impact PCM and musical theater have had on my life.

What is your current favorite song?
My current favorite song that I’ve sung is “Out of My Dreams” from Oklahoma! I love its lyrical beauty and emotional depth. Singing it allowed me to connect deeply with the character and the story.

Anything else you’d like to share?
I’m deeply grateful for the opportunities and support I’ve received through PCM and my musical theater training. Every program, class, and performance has shaped not only my skills but also who I am as a person. I’m excited to keep growing as an artist and see where this journey takes me.
