YM Jazz includes singing, movement, instruments, and storytelling with Sherry Luchette, author of The Flying Jazz Kittens. She introduces students to swing time, blues form, and great jazz music from all eras.
Age 4 – 7. No prior experience required.
Camps & Workshops
June 9 – June 16

This Intensive offers a deep dive into chamber music for intermediate to advanced students. Led by String Department Chair Aimée Kreston and assisted by nationally recognized coaches and teachers, the week includes daily coachings, rehearsals, guest artist recitals, master classes, lectures, and more. It is an intense but fun week!
Accepting applications from students ages 11-18. New and returning students must apply and submit a video to be considered. Qualifying students who apply before May 1 are given priority to available scholarships. Applications are accepted on a rolling basis until the program fills up.

Tuition: $850
This course develops foundations of jazz improvisation, theory, and history. Students enrolled in the workshop study with some of L.A.’s great jazz teachers, gain a comprehensive knowledge of jazz traditions, participate in daily master classes, learn to play pieces by jazz masters, and perform in an end-of-workshop concert.
Age 12+. All instruments welcome, no previous jazz experience required.

Tuition: $275
Clarinet Camp focuses on fundamentals, including breathing, embouchure, and articulation. The camp features a master class by master teacher, Yehuda Gilad, from the University of Southern California. This camp covers reed-work, practice techniques, and chamber music.
Age 12+.
July 10 – 31
Wednesdays: 2:00 – 4:00 pm
Instructor: Danny Janklow
Tuition: $200
Students participate in jazz combos composed of rhythm sections (i.e. piano, guitar, drum set, and percussion) and various wind instruments. Students of all instruments may apply. Literature for each group may be an assortment of standard jazz repertoire as well as arrangements and original compositions.
Age 12+. At least two years of previous instrumental study required.
July 22 – 26
Monday – Friday: 1:30 – 3:30pm
Instructor: Brandon Encinas
Students learn essential chamber skills including independent thinking, problem-solving, teamwork, listening, agency, leadership, and compromise, all while playing music from the great masters like Mozart and Haydn.
Ages 8 – 13.
Eligibility:
- Students in Suzuki books level 4 and above who are under the age of 13, with the recommendation from their private lesson teacher.
- Students ages 10 and above, who are below Suzuki Book level 4, with the recommendation from their private lesson teacher.
Theory Courses

Music Theory Prep is for young students who are just starting lessons and not yet proficient at reading music. Topics include: treble and bass clefs, time signatures, rhythm, notation, and an introduction to famous composers.
Age 9+.

This course is for students who have completed Theory Prep through Level 2 and reviews concepts learned in previous classes to prepare students for the fall.

Adult Ensembles

This is a performance-oriented ensemble for adult amateurs. The ensemble studies and performs original and arranged works for guitar orchestra, with two to four instruments per part, and is led by a conductor. Audition required.

Students acquire ensemble chops while learning just enough about music theory, history, ear training, and healthy practice habits to support their development as a whole musician.

For adults new to string ensemble, this class focuses on fundamentals: tone production, intonation, reading, and playing in an ensemble setting.

Adult History Courses

With the release of The Beatles’ astounding album Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band, the path of Rock music changed, at least for the next two decades. The concept album and the development of what became known as “classic rock” shaped the creation of formidable albums from the late 1960’s to late 1980’s. This course discusses the contributions of rock bands such as Pink Floyd; RUSH; Emerson, Lake and Palmer; ELO; Alan Parsons Project; Supertramp, and others.

Bach. Beethoven. Brahms. Everyone knows “The Three B’s”. But which other composers can lay claim to the “Great B” title? We’ll travel throughout the 19th, 20th and 21st Centuries to uncover masterworks by a bevy of brilliant (musical) brains, including Bartok, Berlioz, Britten, Bernstein, and more!
Intergenerational

Family Ukulele is a multigenerational space to come together and learn the ukulele. Students learn basic chords and rhythms, 5 strumming patterns, simple songs and even some novice improvisational skills that can lead you to have your own jam sessions at home! Ms. Jasso helps you ride that musical wave and gives you the confidence you need to work together, make beautiful music, and best of all have fun learning the Ukulele!
Children ages 7+ with an accompanying adult are invited to enroll.
