From music by the mythic figure of Chevalier de St. Georges to the premiere of Derrick Spiva’s “As I Heard When I Was Young,” this concert tells the stories of just a few black composers’ and performers’ contributions to classical music. It shows how we — and even Beethoven — have erased them from history.

Program:
Chevalier de Saint-Georges: String Quartet in G minor, Op. 1 No. 3
Ludwig van Beethoven: Sonata for Violin and Piano No. 9 in a minor, Op. 47 (“Kreutzer”)
George Bridgetower: Henry, a Ballad
Wynton Marsalis: String Quartet No. 1, “At the Octoroon Balls”
Florence Price: String Quartet in A minor
Derrick Spiva, Jr.: “As I Heard When I Was Young”

Artists:
Maia Jasper White and Kevin Kumar, co-directors/violins
Meredith Crawford, resident viola
Yoshika Masuda, resident cello
HyeJin Kim, resident piano
Geoff Osika, bass
Brian Lauritzen, resident host/artistic partner
