Megan Shung Smith’s band, Iridas, is something new. Their sound, shaped primarily by composer Matt Smith, reaches deep into music history for influences. The lush harmonies and colors of Maurice Ravel combined with the rhythmic and textural intricacy of Gyorgy Ligeti are apparent, but pop music’s sensual, psychedelic underbelly make an appearance as well. Additionally, jazz fusion, alternative rock, and the LA beat scene have all made an impact on Iridas’ sound.
Iridas frequently collaborates with other composers, artists and performers. Pasadena Conservatory of Music faculty member Dorthy Kwon joins the ensemble for Debussy’s String Quartet and a bit of jazz, while live visuals will be provided by projection artist Travis Flournoy for a multi-media concert experience rarely observed in concert halls.
