Emergency Response Plan
Purpose
The purpose of this Emergency Response Manual is to establish guidelines and procedures for protecting the safety and well-being of students, staff, visitors, and the facilities at Pasadena Conservatory of Music, a music school located in Pasadena, California. This manual outlines the steps to take during various emergencies to ensure a swift, organized, and effective response.
Scope
This manual applies to all buildings and facilities on the school campus:
100 N. Hill Ave, Pasadena, CA 91106
- Building A: Houses the library, administrative offices, Barrett Hall (performance hall), studios, and classrooms.
- Building B: Includes classrooms, studios, young musician rooms, and a technology lab (opening in summer 2025).
- Building C: Includes the auditorium, offices, and studios.
- Building D: Includes faculty lounge (kitchen), classroom, and studios.
- Amphitheater: An outdoor venue for performances and gatherings (opening in summer 2025)
The procedures outlined in this manual cover a range of emergency situations, including but not limited to fires, earthquakes, wildfires, medical emergencies, and other critical incidents that may impact the school community.
Policy Statement
The Pasadena Conservatory of Music is committed to ensuring the safety and security of everyone on campus. The leadership and management at Pasadena Conservatory of Music emphasize the importance of preparedness and will provide the necessary resources and training to all staff and students to effectively respond to emergencies. The school’s emergency response plan is designed to minimize risks and ensure the continuity of operations during and after an emergency.

Emergency Scenarios and Procedures
This section provides simple, step-by-step instructions to follow in common emergency situations.
Fire
- Evacuate Immediately: When the fire alarm sounds, leave the building quickly.
- Leave Belongings Behind: Take only essential items.
- Use Nearest Exit: Do not use elevators.
- Assembly Point: Gather in the North Parking Lot and await instructions.
Earthquake
- Drop, Cover, and Hold On: Find shelter under sturdy furniture and protect your head and neck.
- Evacuate After Shaking Stops: Watch for hazards like broken glass.
- Assemble Outdoors: Stay clear of buildings and await further instructions.
Medical Emergencies
- Call 911: For serious injuries, call emergency services immediately.
- Alert Staff: Notify nearby staff for help.
- First Aid Kits: Available throughout the campus for minor injuries.
Utility Outages
- Stay Calm: Remain where you are and await updates.
- Use Emergency Supplies: Backup supplies such as flashlights and water are available on-site.
Bee Swarm or Wildlife Encounter
- Stay Indoors: Move indoors if you encounter a swarm or wildlife.
- Report the Incident: Notify staff if anyone is stung or if assistance is needed.
Emergency Equipment and Supplies by Building
Each building at Pasadena Conservatory of Music is outfitted with essential emergency equipment and supplies. Please familiarize yourself with the general locations of this equipment in case of an emergency.
Building A (Library, Barrett Hall, Studios, Classrooms)
- Emergency Equipment
- Fire Extinguishers: Located near each exit and in the main hallway by the classrooms and Barrett Hall.
- First Aid Cabinet: Large first aid cabinet located in Room 122.
- Emergency Exits: Main exit is through the front doors, with secondary exits near Barrett Hall.
- Emergency Supplies
- Emergency Buckets: Located in Room 122, containing essential supplies to support up to 20 people for 3 days in extended emergencies.
Building B (Classrooms, Studios, Technology Lab)
- Emergency Equipment
- Fire Extinguishers: Located at hallway intersections and near the technology lab.
- First Aid Cabinet: Located in Room 134.
- Emergency Exits: Accessible from each room, with primary exits leading north.
- Emergency Supplies
- Emergency Buckets: Located in Room 134, equipped with supplies for extended emergencies.
Building C (Auditorium, Studios, Offices)
- Emergency Equipment
- Fire Extinguishers: Positioned by the auditorium entrance and along the main hall.
- First Aid Cabinet: Located in Room 400K.
- Emergency Exits: Main exit at the front, with secondary exits behind the auditorium.

- Emergency Buckets: Located in Room 300A.
Building D (Studios)
- Emergency Equipment
- Fire Extinguishers: Located at the main entrance and in studio corridors.
- First Aid Cabinet: Located in Room 400K.
- Emergency Exits: Accessible from each studio room.
- Emergency Supplies
- Emergency Buckets: Stored in Room 400, stocked for 20 people for up to 3 days.
Amphitheater
- Emergency Equipment:
- Fire Extinguishers: Positioned near the stage entrance and seating area.
- First Aid Cabinet: Accessible in nearby Rooms 134 or 122.
- Emergency Exits: Clearly marked exits around the seating area.
Emergency Supplies Overview
Each building is stocked with Emergency Buckets containing essential supplies to support up to 20 people for 3 days in extended emergencies, such as power outages or shelter-in-place situations. The buckets include:
- Water Purification Tablets and Emergency Water Pouches
- 12-Hour Light sticks and Flashlights
- First Aid Kit and Emergency Food Bars
- Crowbar, Duct Tape, and Face Masks
- Battery-Powered Radio and other essential supplies for comfort and hygiene
These emergency buckets are available in key locations throughout campus buildings.
Evacuation Plans and Maps
In the event of an emergency requiring evacuation, it is essential that all occupants of the campus understand the designated evacuation routes and assembly points. Each building is equipped with clear evacuation plans, and floor maps are posted in prominent areas to guide students, staff, and visitors.

Each building on campus has designated evacuation routes and assembly points to ensure the safety of all students, faculty, and staff. Please familiarize yourself with the evacuation plan for the building(s) you frequent most often.
Building A (Library, Barrett Hall, Studios, Ensemble Rooms)
Evacuation Routes
- First Floor: Exit through the main front doors near Barrett Hall or use secondary exits near the library.
- Second Floor: Use the stairwell to the north (near the elevator) or the south stairwell.
Assembly Point: North Parking Lot
Building B (Ensemble Rooms, Young Musician Rooms, Technology Lab)
Evacuation Routes
- First Floor: Exit through the door of the room you are in and proceed north.
- Second Floor: Either head north to take the stairs down near the north parking lot or exit through the door near Room 209.

Evacuation Routes: Exit through the front doors or use the rear exits located behind the auditorium.

- Second Floor: Head east or west to access stairwells and proceed down to exit.

- First aid kits are located in key areas across campus for minor injuries.

- Annual Drills: Each year, the school conducts fire, earthquake, and lockdown drills to ensure that all students know what to do in an emergency.
- Safety Orientations: Safety information is shared with new students and staff at the beginning of the academic year.
