Jazz on Hill with Rickey Woodard

9 faculty members, jazz on hill

Now in its 9th year, Jazz on Hill is a highly-anticipated, annual event that brings together the entire PCM Jazz Studies community. Each year the festivities are organized around a local jazz legend – this year we celebrated and honored the work and career of Rickey Woodard.

In addition to a masterclass, our adult and youth student combos performed in concert before a fantastic set featuring PCM faculty members and Rickey Woodard – and other special guests throughout the evening.

See below for videos of this year’s performances as well quotes from participating faculty members.

“My experience being involved with Jazz on Hill was very inspiring. It was an honor to perform with our wonderful guest artist Ricky Woodard and to have him work with my PCM student jazz combo. My favorite moment was inviting our student combo’s saxophonist Sam Cooper to sit in on the final song of Ricky’s performance. Sam was delighted to play with his hero. It was a terrific moment!”
-Danny Janklow, PCM faculty member

“PCM’s Jazz Department has top-rated educators and performers on faculty, and it’s an absolute thrill to watch the program grow and impact so many students. Jazz on Hill brings the community together for the love of teaching and performing jazz – it’s absolutely wonderful to be a part of this community! Two highlights for me were hearing all the students play so well, and getting to play bass next to Roy McCurdy on drums!”

-Sherry Luchette, PCM faculty member

“The music of the evening featured both the adult and student combos as well as the faculty with Rickey Woodard. I was impressed how prepared the combos were for their performances and to see how well Sherry Luchette and Danny Janklow have coached their combos. It was fun to play the music selection of Rickey Woodard and hear him talk about stories from his career in between the sets. It was a special evening of music and I’m looking forward to Jazz on Hill 2025!”
