Yi-Ju Lai
Dr. Yi-Ju Lai is a Taiwanese pianist whose artistry has established her as a compelling presence on both the concert stage and in the studio. She has performed at internationally renowned venues including Carnegie Hall, The Kennedy Center, and the National Chiang Kai-shek Cultural Center, engaging audiences through performances distinguished by clarity, depth, and expressive nuance.
A dedicated and versatile collaborator, Dr. Lai has worked with leading artists such as Daniel Hope, Ronald Leonard, Paul Coletti, and Anne Akiko Meyers. Her musical development has been shaped by the guidance of distinguished pianists including Menahem Pressler, Leon Fleisher, and Byron Janis, as well as her principal teachers John Perry, Jeffrey Kahane, Kevin Fitz-Gerald, and Norman Krieger.
Equally committed to education, Dr. Lai is recognized for her ability to cultivate technical fluency, musical independence, and artistic confidence in students of all levels. She has taught extensively across private and institutional settings, including her work with Center Stage Strings in California, where she coached chamber music and collaborated with faculty artists. She has also been featured as a guest artist at the Beethoven Festival.
Dr. Lai holds a Bachelor of Music and Artist Diploma from the Colburn Conservatory of Music and both a Master of Music and Doctor of Musical Arts from the USC Thornton School of Music.
In recognition of her commitment to teaching, Dr. Lai was named a top piano teacher by Steinway & Sons in 2022 and 2024. In addition to her teaching at the Pasadena Conservatory of Music, she serves as Chair of the CAPMT District IX Sonata/Sonatina Competition, and works as a staff pianist at the Colburn Conservatory of Music.
