About the program

Under Stalin’s scrutinizing eye, artists were expected to toe the party line, avoiding any hint of individuality. Some acquiesced. Those who refused met a grim fate. Shostakovich led a tormented life, struggling for personal expression in a sea of repression and conformity. Program features works by Shostakovich and his contemporaries, appeasers and rebels alike.
