The Noise of Time
by Julian Barnes
Under Stalin’s scrutinizing eye, artists were expected to toe the party line, avoiding any hint of individuality. Some acquiesced. Those who refused met a grim fate. Shostakovich led a tormented life, struggling for personal expression in a sea of repression and conformity.
PCM faculty and friends perform works by Shostakovich and his contemporaries, appeasers and rebels alike. For a closer look into this program, you can attend our Prelude on February 26 in Barrett Hall at PCM.
