Dr. Steve Kronauer will talk with composer Joseph Julian Gonzalez and percussionist Chris Garcia about the upcoming concert program, curated to celebrate the Latin American community and Día de los Muertos. Gonzalez will talk about how Aztec poetry inspired his piece, Misa Azteca, which will be performed on October 28; and Garcia will introduce audience members to the traditional Aztec instruments used in Gonzalez’s work.

A family friendly event, Sangria, Skulls, and Lotería! offers something for everyone! Children, parents, and grandparents can decorate their own sugar skulls, a cherished folk art that serves as a reminder of our own mortality with the sugar representing the sweetness of life. Traditionally, skulls have the name of the departed soul on the forehead and are placed on altars or gravestones to honor the return of a particular spirit; skulls decorated here can be used to decorate altars available for rent at AVoLA’s concert on October 28. Also, there will be some lively rounds of Lotería, a game of chance similar to Bingo.
