About Stanley Sharp:

Stanley Sharp was inspired by his music-teacher father to study the cello. He was accepted to study at the Julliard School of Music in New York City. Instead, he elected to study for four years under John Ehrlich, himself a student of the legendary cellists, Pablo Casals, Emanuel Feuermann. Later, Stan auditioned for and was invited by renowned cellist, Lynn Harrell to study at The University of Southern California, where he was awarded the Harvey-Erickson full graduate scholarship. Shortly thereafter, Stan was invited by Mr. Harrell to become his teaching assistance on the USC Faculty. Other prominent cellists with whom Stan has studied include, Zara Nelsova (Juilliard), Raya Garbousova (Moscow Conservatory with Mstislav Rostropovich), Robert Gardner (Principal cellist New York Opera Company) and Fred Zlotkin (faculty of Juilliard Conservatory of Music, NY,NY.)

Following a successful full time study and teaching at USC, Stan was invited as guest lecture, teacher, and performer at several other universities; namely The Beijing Central Conservatory of Music, Shanghai Conservatory of Music, Creighton University, University of Nebraska, Washington State University and Omaha Conservatory of Music. Stan Sharp taught also at the Azusa University in Southern California for over eight years. While at Azusa he was the cellist for The Azusa Piano Quartet which performed extensively in the United States and abroad. Stan Sharp also performs with the Khachaturian String Quartet where they recently performed throughout Asia. Some of the cities the Khachaturian String Quartet performed include, Beijing, Shang-Hai, Da-Lian, Xu-Zhou, Yue-Yang, Xi-Ning, Lan-Zhou, Ning-Bo, Wu-Han, Ji-Nan, and De-Zhou.

During all this activity, Stan Sharp became a full time faculty member of the Colburn School of Performing Arts and has taught there for over fifteen years. Stan also participates in summer festivals at Montecito International Music Festival, Idyllwild Music Festival, and Omaha Conservatory of The Arts Summer Festival.

Stan Sharp is the winner of numerous cello competitions, including the National Cello Congress, National American String Teachers Association (ASTA), National Music Teachers Association (MTNA) and the National Midwestern Symphony Soloist Guild and has been invited to solo with many orchestras and recitals throughout the United States.

Stan is an active performing cellist and has played with many symphony organizations: Los Angeles Philharmonic, Hollywood Bowl Orchestra, Pacific Symphony, New West Symphony, Santa Barbara Symphony and Opera Pacific with well known conductors including Simon Rattle, John Williams, Yuri Temirkanov, to name a few. Stan has recorded extensively for numerous Hollywood Motion Picture sound tracks with top film composers, including John Williams, Hans Zimmer, James Horner, Jerry Goldsmith, Danny Elfman, Marc Shaimann, Lalo Schifrin, James Newton Howard, David Newman, mark Isham, John Powell, and Tan Dun to name a few. Furthermore, Stan has performed and recorded with leading Rock, Jazz, Pop, and Classic recording artists including, Andrea Bocelli, Stevie Wonder, Santana, John Legend, Earth Wind and Fire, Elton John, Henry Conic Jr., Aerosmith, Steve Tyrol, Air, Julio Iglesias, Carpenters, Barry Manalow, David Foster as well as Chinese, Japanese, Taiwanese, and Korean pop singers. Stan has also played for Prince Andrew and Princess Ferguson in Los Angeles and David Foster’s wedding in Montecito, California.

Stan Sharp’s students have been accepted to the top conservatories and universities in the United States and abroad including: Yale, Duke, Brown Peabody, Juilliard, New England Conservatory, USC, Michigan University, Cleavland Institute of Music, Oberlin Conservatory of Music, Paris Conservatory of Music, Moscow Conservatory, Beijing Central Conservatory many receiving full scholarship. Several have received the “Herbert Zippert Scholarship” which pays full tuition at the Colburn School through graduation as well as the full Tuition Honorary “Richard Colburn Fellowship” which only four Colburn students received each year. Students have won numerous competitions including American String Teachers Association, Grand Prize SYMF Soloist playing with Orchestra, New Krane International Competition in the United States, China and Europe.
